NATO officially started work in Kuçovë for the construction of its first air base in the Western Balkans, the Albanian defense minister said today.
Minister Olta Xhaçka, in fact, met in Tirana with the American aviation commander, General Tod Wolters, to formalize the start of the NATO air base project in Kuçovë, which will take five years to complete.
"The Kuçovë airbase has unique characteristics thanks to the existing runway, situated in a convenient geographical position with respect to both Albania and the Western Balkans. ”- said Wolters, adding that the Kuçovë project will greatly benefit NATO's capabilities to monitor the potential fighter plane.
NATO will invest over 50 million euros in the first phase of the modernization of the Kuçovë airbase, as confirmed by a post on Facebook by Prime Minister Rama last August:
"Kuçovë it will also serve as a national base for the Albanian aeronautics and this strategic investment of NATO in Albania will bring a new standard for our armed forces. ”- the prime minister had added.
The base will act as a support for NATO by providing air transport, logistical support and support with the air police, as well as support for training and coaching. Located about 70 km south of Tirana, the base was built in the 50 years to house the aircraft of the Albanian air force.
