The President of the European Council, Charles Michel made an official visit to Tirana today, 24 January and together with the Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama they discussed the negotiations and the Donors' Conference of 17 February.
Rama thanked the President of the European Council for his support for Albania after the November 26 earthquake, saying:
“Charles Michel is a friend of our region. I am happy to meet him again, this time as President of the European Council. I thank him for his commitment to the Donors' Conference. Europe is close to us and will not leave us alone in our path of reconstruction. We also talked about integration and shared opinions on what has been achieved and what should be achieved, but also on the new integration methodology ".
Charles Michel: "We still don't have unanimity on integration"
The President of the European Council also stated that there is currently no unanimity between EU countries to start negotiations without first agreeing on a methodology. “We need the European Council for a unanimous decision on the negotiations. So I proposed three pillars that should go on in parallel and work has started, since soon we will have the opportunity to have a debate on these three topics, to modernize the electoral process "Michel said.
- The need for Heads of Government to agree on what enlargement reforms will be in order to have a credible process with political leadership.
- Before the summer, the European Commission proposed the opening of negotiations to the Council. We will have this debate again. The European Commission should be clear on the recommendation it will make and the Council will discuss with all Member States to make a decision.
- The invitation to mobilize the European Union table for an investment pact for investment growth. Encouraging economic development, which is the key to continuing this integration process.
Another point of discussion was the Donors Conference, for which Charles Michel said that "he will work with the goal of having real support". Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed confident that Europe will not leave Albania alone in the reconstruction process after the tragic earthquake, hoping for great support from the conference. Rama said he shared with the President of the European Council the ambition to take a new step and without wasting time in the fight against organized crime and that this year Albania will be a better country. "
The International Donors Conference, organized by the European Union to support post-earthquake reconstruction in Albania, will be held on 17 February in Brussels as announced by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
