A new bill concerning Albanian citizenship adopted by the government of the Land of Eagles and which should be approved by parliament, will allow members of the Albanian diaspora to more easily acquire citizenship.
For the acquisition of the latter, in fact, it will be sufficient to prove that the ancestors of the citizens in question had Albanian citizenship, following the acquisition process called "ius sanguinis".
"Citizenship citizenship will be granted to all foreign citizens who can prove to be related, up to three generations, to a person of Albanian nationality."- said on Tuesday the deputy interior minister, Rovena Voda.
Another important change made to the law concerning Albanian citizenship is the release of the latter for anyone born in the territory of the Republic of Albania, an acquisition process that is indicated by the legal expression "Ius Soli".
The question of citizenship
The question of citizenship has always been a topic of great public interest due to the large number of Albanian citizens living abroad and the large number of ethnic Albanians living outside the Balkan borders.
Out of a total of 4,5 million Albanians, the current population residing in the country amounts to "only" 2,8 million. It is therefore believed that at least 1,7 million Albanians live abroad, most of them in Italy and Greece as a result of the mass exodus of the 90 years immediately after the fall of the communist regime of Enver Hoxha.
Based on a decision reached in the 2013, as reported by BalkanInsight, the Albanian state declared that all ethnic Albanian citizens would have the right to apply for Albanian citizenship. However, this provision did not include the citizens of Kosovo so as not to upset the process of liberalization of Kosovo visas with the EU, which has since stalled.
Only a small part, in fact, which mainly included prominent politicians and a large part of the entrepreneurial elite, managed to elude this restriction and to acquire Albanian citizenship by ethnicity.
The new bill adopted by the Albanian government should be voted in parliament in September, immediately after the summer break.
