In the 2018 the Albanian citizens residing in one of the countries of the European Union amounted to around 990.000, according to data published by Eurostat.
Where do Albanian citizens live in the EU?
Most Albanians living in one of the EU countries live in neighboring Italy and Greece. In the beautiful country, the number of Albanian emigrants amounts to around 440.000, while in Greece - even if the latest official figures date back to the 2011 - to around 480.000.
Behind Greece and Italy, very detached, there is Germany with about 50.000 Albanian emigrants. The remaining part, however, lives between Belgium (6146), Sweden (2889), Austria (2563), Switzerland (1867), Holland (1084) and other countries (about 5000). However, specific data on Albanian citizens in some countries such as France and the United Kingdom are missing.
In Europe as asylum seekers
In total, in the period from 2009 to 2018, the number of Albanian citizens who requested asylum for the first time amounts to 178.515: the highest value among European countries, according to Eurostat data and reworked by the Albanian magazine Monitor.
The record was reached in the 2015, when there were 69.000 requests, and then dropped to less than half the following year (33.000) and to 26.000 in the 2017. By comparing the number of requests to the population, Albania is first in the world even in front of countries at war such as Syria and Iraq.
Furthermore, Eurostat data show that the main destinations for Albanian asylum seekers are Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The largest flows were to Germany, where according to the European statistical institute 84.000 were the asylum applications of Albanian citizens from the 2009.
This value represents approximately 47% of the total requests for asylum in the last decade. The record for Germany was reached in the 2015, with about 55.000 requests for asylum from Albania.
However, last year France was the country with the highest number of asylum requests from Albanian citizens. Greece is in second place and the United Kingdom in third.
