50 Syrian refugees arrived overnight in the city of Gjirokastra yesterday. The refugees who have arrived so far mainly come from Syria and belong to different age groups as they have moved from their home countries as households.
Refugees have entered from Greece, a country that is facing a huge influx of refugees after Turkey opens the border. This situation has also prompted the Albanian authorities to take measures and plan reception centers, as Albania represents a gateway to the countries of the European Union.
As reported by the Albanian broadcaster Top Channel currently the refugees arrived have been welcomed at the Gerhot reception center, about 2 kilometers north of Gjirokastër.
The institutions have calculated a maximum reception capacity of 30.000 refugees. The Civil Protection, State Police, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Defense were involved in this emergency situation, while the use of doctors and the supply of logistic tools from other institutions was also considered.
Refugees from Greece will be accommodated in Korça, Saranda and Gjirokastra, while immigrants tracked down in Albanian territory will be accommodated in Elbasan and Lezha.
The refugee crisis was reopened a few days ago when Turkey opened the border to allow Syrian refugees to travel to EU countries, leading Greece and Bulgaria to intensify border controls.
Albanians' opinion on the arrival of refugees
The rumors about the high number of refugees that Albania is preparing to host have divided public opinion. Many welcomed this move by the government recalling the famous one Albanian hospitality proven to be towards Jews during the second world war both towards the Italian soldiers finished off after the8 September.
Furthermore, this hospitality is also due to the fact that Albania has experienced the scourge of immigration.
Others oppose it, declaring that a real replacement of the population is consciously taking place, with Albanians leaving their homeland and foreigners arriving.
