Yesterday afternoon Rezart Taçi, president of the Taçi Oil company, ended up in the 302 prison in Tirana. The Court of Appeal accepted the appeal of its lawyers modifying the precautionary measure decided by the Court of First Instance: Taçi is obliged to appear in the attorney's office on Monday at the 14.30.
The defense line was discounted. For his lawyers, Taçi does not involve public danger and has been willing to respect the rulings of the Albanian justice system. Moreover, their client has no criminal record and is one of the largest contributors to the Albanian state.
The fate was different for the two bodyguards who were present in the attack against the editor of the daily Tema, Mero Baze. For Bledar Lilo, the court ordered house arrest, while the other bodyguard, Irgen Selfo, remains in prison because he agreed to hit Baze, declaring that he did not know he was a journalist.
After the exposure of Baze in the prosecution, Taçi is accused of having attacked him on the evening of 2 last November and risks up to two years of imprisonment. Taçi surrendered to the State Police three days later, denying he had used the violence against Baze, but the Court of First Instance decided on the remand in custody. He stayed for 14 days until yesterday afternoon.
