An unfortunate episode saw the well-known Albanian oilman Rezart Taçi as the protagonist last night in the center of Tirana. In one of the many pubs that populate the Bllok (neighborhood in the Albanian capital) the oilman along with his bodyguards would have beaten Mero Baze, editor and director of the Albanian daily Tema, which is currently hospitalized.
According to the reconstruction of Baze, towards the 23: last night's 30, after the end of an investigative television program, had headed together with two other colleagues in one of the pubs in the city where Rezart Taçi was also in the company of his bodyguards. After an argument the journalist was beaten by Taçi and then by his bodyguards for at least 4-5 minutes, fainting from the beatings he had suffered.
The journalist was admitted to an emergency hospital and filed a complaint against his attackers. As witnesses there were also two other journalists: Andi Bushati and Arban Hasani. The State Police announced that they had tried to contact Rezart Taçi for clarification. According to the Top-Channel station, two bodyguards were arrested and Taçi himself is wanted by the police. Instead the hospital ward that houses the journalist Baze has been filled with journalists and editors who are expressing their solidarity with their colleague.
From the pages of his newspaper and in the episodes of his television program "Faktori Plus" on the private broadcaster Vizion Plus, Baze reported facts concerning tax evasion and smuggling in the importation of oil by the Taçi group. Baze also dealt with the privatization of the public oil company ARMO, revealing the scheme used by Taçi to buy it, even though initially it appeared that the tender was awarded by an American company. Furthermore, for the director of the daily Tema there are links of financial interest between Taçi and Prime Minister Berisha.
