The trial of the leader of the LSI, currently in government and coalition with the PD of Berisha, started late Monday evening. The preliminary decisions, taken by the Albanian High Court, are all against Meta.
It all started when Dritan Prifti, a member of the LSI, after an internal split in the party, had delivered a video recorded by him to the Top Channel Albanian television in which he would see the then deputy prime minister pressuring Prifti to favor some "friendly" companies to have public contracts.
The judges of the High Court admitted this video among the prosecution's evidence. Bold and essential decisions as the process will be based essentially on this video. Meta's defense had asked not to include it in evidence as illegally registered, moreover to a minister and deputy who enjoyed immunity when the video was recorded. Shortly after the publication of the video Meta had indeed resigned, thus renouncing its immunity. Request that it was rejected by the Court which thus admitted the video between the tests.
The second request of Meta's lawyers concerned instead the examination of the video. In the absence of suitable structures, the video had been examined by foreign experts who had guaranteed its truth, thus claiming that it had not been tampered with or modified. The defense lawyers asked to redo these tests because the same had been requested before the trial and therefore, according to them, taking away from the defense the possibility to expose its reasons. Request that was accepted by the Court but has not yet identified Albanian experts to examine the video. The Court also established the date of the next hearing that will take place on July 22 where the first witnesses will be heard. And the first is Dritan Prifti, the deputy who delivered the video. After him a series of Albanian entrepreneurs will also be heard, including Rezart Taçi.
After Beqja case therefore, in which the Constitutional Court has withdrawn the mandate of a parliamentarian, the Albanian justice is preparing to examine another case with a high political value. And the signs, at least for now, indicate that justice intends to go all the way.
