From the day of the 17 September, the toll on the Rruga and Kombit (The Road of the Nation) - which links Albania to Kosovo - was reintroduced in an environment heavily attended by the police, after five months ago the implementation of the toll had triggered violent rebellions and protests.
The reintroduction of the tolls comes after the government renegotiated the tariffs with the concessionaire of the road and with the officials of the local government, so as to apply a toll of 0,78 € (100 lek) to the residents of the area of Kukës and one discount for those who often use that road section, compared to 5 € for the rate for other users.
The new implementation of the toll was postponed to 17 Settembre in order to allow the numerous Kosovar citizens in Albania during the summer season to return to their country without further costs. Local media reported a high police presence yesterday, due to fears of another protest by politicians and local residents.
However, there has been a protest: local officials and members of the Democratic party have complained about the psychological terror used by the police to prevent local residents from participating in organized protests.
"The entire apparatus of the state police sided against the citizens to protect the theft present in the bribery concession of the 'Rruga and Kombit'. Police officers carried out a show of force and used psychological terror against citizens to prevent them from protesting." - he has declared Agron Shehaj, deputy of the democratic party who led the local protest in the city of Kukës, which then concluded:
"This day demonstrates how crime consisting of government and media alliance is a danger to Albania and our future. There is only one way out and this is destruction. This is our duty and the duty of every Albanian with courage and dignity. "
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama thanked the residents of Kukës for their civic reaction, promising new investments such as the airport already built and waiting to become operational and a new stadium.
Rruga and Kombit tolls start from 2,5 € for motorcycles up to 16,2-22,5 € for trucks, via the 5 € for cars and 11,2 € for buses.
