The first school in Albanian in La Spezia was inaugurated at the Fossitermi senior center, with the aim of teaching children and young people from the 6 to the 14 years, second and third generations, the language and their cultural roots.
The initiative was promoted by the association At Gjergi Fishta, the Albanian Community of La Spezia (Juljan Topcija is its president), with the support of Edil Brija and the collaboration of the Albanian Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of La Spezia. The opening day was attended by the Honorable Manuela Gagliardi and the councilor Giulia Giorgi.
The words of President Topcija and the teacher Dhurata Nufi
"It is an initiative that had been conceived for many years but had never been carried out due to some bureaucratic reasons.
Now, thanks to all our community and the support of the municipality of La Spezia, we have succeeded in obtaining this space and realizing this great project, thanks also to the help of the Albanian ministry of culture that has helped us with all the didactic part.
Anyone who loses his roots loses everything. We do not want this: our children, even if they feel they are Italian because they were born here, still have Albanian origins to all effects.. ”- stated the president of the Albanian community of La Spezia, Julian Tocija.
Very happy with this new initiative, also the teacher who will take care of these Albanian children born in Italy, or Dhurata Nufi:
"I thank everyone for giving me this opportunity. I have practiced this trade in Albania for 15 years, and it is a dream to do it here too. Up to now there are 24 children, from 6 to 14 years, who want and enjoy learning the Albanian language.
My goal is to arrive at the end of the year with these guys who will be able to write, read and speak in Albanian. Then we will teach them our story."- said Dhurata Nufi.
