After the meeting in Rome with the Italian Prime Minister Conte and the Foreign Minister Di Maio, the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama through a shared video message on social media, said it is clear to him that the February 17 donor conference cannot meet all the needs of Albania but who will try to do everything possible to succeed. In addition, he also said he will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and some key high-level contacts next week.
“Greetings from Rome, where we held two important meetings with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the eve of the Donors' Conference to be held on February 17 under the auspices of the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen.
I thanked Prime Minister Conte and Di Maio for the invaluable help of the friendly Italy from the first hours after the devastating earthquake. I have informed them of the work with the reconstruction plans and the damage report that should be completed in the coming days in collaboration with the EU and the United Nations. The final figure has not yet been released but the data give us a sum of around € 1 billion (a little more a little less).
With the help of the friendly countries where Italy is among the closest, we will strive to make the donors' conference a success. We are clear that to meet all needs will not be enough. We will continue after the Conference with courageous and financial aspects, taking advantage of the macro-economic sustainability that we have achieved with the Reforms in recent years. We will combine different funding schemes for reconstruction. Certainly without reducing and limiting other investments and social protection programs.
I am very grateful and encouraged for the total availability that I found from Conte and Di Maio. I will continue with Chancellor Merkel earlier in the week and with some key high-level contacts for the conference to be successful. Reconstruction plans are moving rapidly within the calendar to start building the first houses in the spring and ending with rural houses by 2020. Work is also underway on reconstruction plans in the affected cities where interventions will be massive and the process a little longer. We are within the set times. In the meantime, it is clear to all of us that we will continue to pay the rent until the last day until we return them to their homes.
The reconstruction of the schools and hospital of Laç together with 5 centers to be rebuilt from scratch. It is a tiring wait for those affected, but I urge all of you to resist and have full confidence that no one will be left alone "said Rama.
Thank you so much @GiuseppeConteIT @luigidimaio for the great humanity that distinguishes you in the eyes of Albania in these very difficult moments after the earthquake last November, which without Italy and your great willingness to help us would be insurmountable🙏 pic.twitter.com/GXjry4sL3x
