The approval of the electoral reform before the summer holidays: this is the request made by the Italian Foreign Ministry, Luigi Di Maio, to the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and to the leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha during the telephone conversations held today.
In the two calls - as reported by Shqiptarja.com - Di Maio expressed his appreciation for the agreement on electoral reform reached so far by political forces in Albania by inviting the two leaders to approve the law in parliament before the summer holidays:
"It is important to maintain a constructive spirit and be open to dialogue. Electoral reform confirms the fact that both sides can work together to achieve common goals."- said Minister Di Maio.
The latter, speaking with Prime Minister Rama, underlined the importance of continuing the reform process, a fundamental condition for Albania's accession to the European Union:
"For Italy, work on justice reform remains a key issue, which must be fully implemented as soon as possible. […] Italy offers Albania full support on its path towards the European Union. " - continued the Italian foreign minister.
Minister Di Maio also thanked Prime Minister Edi Rama for sending health personnel to Italy in the most difficult months of the COVID-19 pandemic, and re-launched the fight against the virus as a new field of collaboration between Rome and Tirana .
Collaboration in the fight against Coronavirus further strengthens the partnership between the two countries, also with respect to the economic challenges triggered by the global health emergency.
Italy-Albania: a common economic commission
In order to establish closer cooperation in the economic sector and to mitigate the negative effects of the latest crisis caused by COVID-19, Minister Di Maio proposed the activation of a Italy - Albania Common Economic Commission, aimed at allowing providing the right impetus to increase investment between the two countries.
