At the conclusion of the 13 ^ Edition of the month of Albanian Culture in Parma, the inauguration of a monument dedicated to Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg was held in the Eunice Kennedy Park.
Scanderbeg main figure in the history of Albania was a leader, strategist, proud defender of the land and of his people, fought strenuously against the advance of the Ottoman Empire, damming for over 25 years the spread of Muslim belief in Eastern Europe. He is remembered with the nickname "Athleta Christi and defender of the faith" and is a founding figure of the Albanian cultural identity, becoming the undisputed symbol of cohesion and national unity. Parma is the first city in northern Italy that dedicated a monument to the mythical Albanian hero. The initiative that was promoted and supported by the Albanian Association of Parma and Provincia Scanderberg saw the presence of the Mayor of Parma Federico Pizzarotti “after the decision to have all the flags of the most represented nationalities in Parma waving in the Ponte delle Nazioni, this new monument represents the cohesion between the Albanians of Parma, some here for several generations, and the whole city. We would have had the Mayor of Tirana with us today, but obviously the priorities after the earthquakes that hit Albania recently have changed. This statue, in this public park, today, reaffirms our closeness even in this moment and the friendship that binds our communities ".
The Councilor for Participation and International Cooperation Nicoletta Paci stressed that "the Albanian community of Parma, the Scanderbeg Association have, for many years, been among the most active and engaging in the city. It is along the way that we have done and many activities promoted together. This monument adds a piece to the events, to the paths taken forward and gives your community the opportunity to have an evidence of your roots in this which is your new home ”. Deputy Councilor Marion Gajda said “we are very happy with this inauguration. Scanderbeg is a reference figure for all albanity: for the Albanians of Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia and Greece. Scanderbeg is a symbol of integration, just think of the arbëreshë communities that arrived in southern Italy at the time of Scanderbeg and have integrated perfectly with Italian society. Scanderbeg is a figure that has always looked to the west, to Europe. And this is what Albania wants today: looking towards Europe and towards the future ".
The Ambassador of the Republic of Albania in Italy HE Anila Bitri, accompanied by the Consul General of the Republic of Kosovo Adrian Andreja in Milan and by Anila Pojani Consul General of Albania in Milan thanked the Administration and the city for the initiative.
"Every day we see an Italian-Albanian community. It is a winning model where the demographic, social, economic, artistic and intellectual contribution makes us complementary. However, Albanians in Italy continue to cultivate Albanian dances, music and culture. The reality we live needs signs of this union and evidence of roots. This inauguration is a political will of brotherhood and solidarity. This inauguration, like the immediate help that the Italians transmitted after the 26 earthquake last November. Firefighters and Italian civil protection were the first to arrive to address the situation. Scanderbeg unites us, unites its history and its values ", said Anila Bitri before revealing the bust of the hero created by the sculptor Idriz Balani.
