The Centenary of the proclamation of the independence of Albania, which took place in Vlora in the 1912, is giving rise to a strong feeling of friendship between the Albanian people and the Albanians of the Diaspora, wherever they are. That is to say, in the name of two important personalities of the Albanian nation, Ismail Qemali and Girolamo De Rada, a spirit of fraternity that has united our peoples over the centuries. Especially in the Calabria region, arbёreshe constitute, at this time, the fundamental element in the resumption of a cultural vivacity and scientific activity in defense of one's identity. We are therefore faced with a sort of "new renaissance" of the awareness of arbёreshe, which at this moment pose the problem of the resumption of an activity that unites the Arberia on a theme of great topical interest: the request of the entry of Albania into Europe.
At the time of De Rada, becoming spokesman in Europe for the independence of Albania, the arbёreshe offered an extraordinary contribution, comparable to that equally extraordinary given in the Italian Risorgimento; today the new role that they assume in their conferences, in their studies and research is that of redefining a positive role to still be a bearer of unity and capable of credible action at European level.
The organization that gives meaning to this issue is the Foundation Mediterranean Southern Institute which is based in Cosenza and established the "Gramscian Itineraries" in the municipality of Plataci, a small Italian-Albanian center of upper Calabria of which a branch of the family of Antonio Gramsci, a great Italian intellectual of the twentieth century, originated. MeMe that, this year, two extraordinary initiatives were held, one in Plataci and the other in Tirana, which left their mark in the cultural and publicist environments of the two countries. In fact, with the slogan "The two Risorgimenti", Plataci discussed the need to take the Mediterranean as a reference point for a new southernistic policy and the arbёreshё as a vehicle of unity and not of division, for a new relationship between Italy, Southern Italy and the Balkans, of which Albania is the strong point in the request for membership of Europe. In Tirana, instead, at the Mediterranean University and in collaboration with the Association "Lisi i Arbrit", correspondent of the Foundation MeMe in the Albanian capital, a conference was held on the history of Albania and the proclamation of its independence. Both at the convention of Plataci and at the conference in Tirana the cultural and ideal success was extraordinary, and even more evident when signing the protocols, in the city of Gramsci, of the twinning between the Albanian city and the municipality of Plataci. The popular demonstration that followed has created great enthusiasm for the presence of Antonio Gramsci's nephew, Antonio Junior, a great Russian musician who has performed in public.
The personalities present, of high scientific level, have shown that, today, it is necessary to get out of the intimate seclusion, to analyze problems according to a more general perspective.
For this reason the Foundation Mediterranean Southern Institute he insisted on finding a point of connection for all the Albanian forces of the old and new settlement that existed in Southern Italy, to then link up with other presences in other Balkan countries and in Albania itself, which would give strength to this request. Scanderbeg has given the signal of the rescue of the Albanian people indicating that dignity and freedom are won through the struggle against the oppressors; Qemali and De Rada, drawing on his teaching, have indicated to the arbёreshe and to the Albanians all to conquer the independence of a homeland, the Albanian and the Italian one; the arbёreshe today, to follow their example, must reposition themselves in the new Mediterranean geopolitical chessboard to give their contribution of culture and ideas and thus make Albania assume a leading position among the European nations.
