Tuesday morning November 26 2019 it was not an ordinary awakening for Albania, as it was hit by an earthquake with an epicenter Durres, disastrously touching other countries such as Thumanë, Laç, Mamurras, Vorë, Kombinat- Tirana, Lezhë.
A situation that unfortunately has led well 51 victims; about 2000 were injured, at least 700 of whom were hospitalized, as well as 4000 displaced.
Finding yourself in front of such a critical situation is never easy, especially when you are unprepared. Last year the law establishing the creation of civil protection entered into force, but unfortunately the implementing decrees have not yet been approved, so the lack of a defined system has created many emergency management problems. Fortunately what was not lacking was Europe's solidarity. We know very well the link between Albania and Italy, a historical link that has become closer in our days.
La Puglia region has played a very important role in offering medical assistance and making its hospitals available. All in collaboration with the Albanian Government and the Albanian Consulate accredited in Bari. Al Bari Polyclinic the citizen has been transferred Marlin Shkodra of Durres and Albert Cara by Thumanë. The young Shkodra was transferred to a coma while Mr. Cara reached the hospital in very serious health conditions, having no idea of the tragedy that had affected all her family members, remained victims of the earthquake.
On this occasion, the Albanian community in Bari, in collaboration with the whole Albanian Consulate and with the support of the association "La Giusta Causa"immediately after the arrival of the Albanian citizens at the Policlinico di Bari they organized a meeting to discuss and evaluate and in the end identify the best way to offer their help. Being faced with a temporary but certainly not short-lived situation, it was deemed necessary to create a program and a communication and information network. From a logistical point of view, joint action was indispensable because in addition to the citizens, hospitalized in a serious state of health, their family members also came to Bari to offer their loved ones moral and psychological support. For this reason, the need and the need to look for a place to live and lodge arose. A great contribution they made: the Caritas Bari-Bitonto, the volunteers and the parish priest of the parish of San Luca in Bari, together with the constant presence of the Consulate General of Albania in Bari.
In this regard, the Albanian Consul, Eng. Ardian Haskaj, said: "It is the task and duty of the Consulate that I represent to help and support Albanian citizens in Italy, but this sad event has shown the bond and solidarity of the whole Albanian community in Puglia. I thank all those, Albanians and Italians, who supported us in this tragic circumstance. "
On this critical occasion of full emergency I got to know many people who truly committed themselves with the heart like Alda Kushi, originally from Durres and resident for years in Bari, currently research fellow at the University of Bari "Aldo Moro" and Nertil Muca, student, originally from Vorë, member of the Black Red Supporters (TKZ)in fact, with their support it played a crucial role in this organization.
Currently Messrs. Shkodra and Cara are hospitalized in the department of UOC of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine - Unipolar Spinal Unit with Director on prof. Fiore Pietro.
In addition, many other evenings and beneficiary dinners were organized in Bari and surroundings for the earthquake victims, highly appreciated because every help is useful. The situation in Albania has not yet stabilized, but daily life has recovered in order to work and find a balance. We argue that we must not look down at all, but in addition to offering our small contribution, we must update ourselves on the progress of the situation. It takes time but it is appropriate not to forget that the situation is not yet stable and a lot of work and good will are needed.
