Starting today, 8 September 2019, Albania will also be on the list of non-EU countries that issue convertible licenses in Italy. All Albanian citizens residing in Italy up to four years, holders of an Albanian driving license of the new model released by 24.01.2017 will be able to carry out the conversion of the driving license in Italy.
After two years of confusion, the question of the recognition of the conversion of Albanian licenses in Italy is resolved
We had to deal with the fact that the new Albanian driving license (the one issued by the 2017, for instance link ) was not recognized in Italy.
This was due to the fact that the Albanian lacked a regular institutional communication to let the Italian counterpart know the issue of the new license.
In May the Albanian government he was formally committed to solve the problem, and had approved an illustrative draft on the new licenses to be transmitted to the Italian government.
Once this official communication was received, the Italian Department of Transportation transmitted on 3 September a circular (link ) to all the competent offices, finally affirming the right to convert even the new license. The circular also underlines that old licenses can still be converted, bringing to two the Albanian driving license model considered valid in Italy.
The circular was transmitted not only to the offices of the Motorization, but also to the police who until a few days ago considered the drivers with the new Albanian driving license as if driving without a license.
We remind you that the Albanian citizen in possession of a regular driving license, can drive within 1 year from the date in which he declares his residence in Italy. Once this date has expired, he can no longer drive, otherwise the license will be withdrawn.
From that moment, however, even if he cannot drive, he still has other 3 years to ask for the conversion of the driving title. Once this deadline has passed, to obtain the driving license must follow the regular examination path.
