The president of the Albanian Republic, Ilir Meta, went to Calabria yesterday to remember and celebrate - together with the Arbëreshë - the 550th anniversary of the death of the national hero Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg.
The meeting with Sergio Mattarella
The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, also attended the celebration of the 550th anniversary of the death of Scanderbeg (also much loved by the Calabrian communities, heirs of the populations that arrived in Italy from Albania between the 15th and 18th centuries).
The two presidents were welcomed by hundreds of people, including many children, who waved the Italian and Albanian flags. To receive the two Heads of State there was the president of the Calabria Region, Mario Oliverio, and the mayor of San Demetrio Corone, Salvatore Lamirata. The two Heads of State inaugurated a commemorative plaque dedicated to Skanderbeg.
The two Presidents were welcomed, in the space in front of the Collegio Sant'Adriano, with a frame of traditional Albanian songs and dances proposed by groups of young people from San Demetrio Corone.
The statements of Meta and Mattarella
"The Arbëreshë are a precious international wealth, as they have preserved the customs, customs, traditions and the Albanian language intact. Without them there would have been no Albanian national renaissance; neither Albania nor Kosovo would exist today. ”- stated the president Meta, who later recalled Scanderbeg:
"Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg not only united the Albanians, but boasted of this throughout Europe. It inspired the entire Albanian people during the national renaissance in the declaration of independence of the 1912.
It is an honor to participate in this commemorative mass, aimed at recalling the spirit of Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg: he is not only the one who gave our people a European identity, but will always remain the most alive among the Albanians. "- concluded Meta.
The word then passed to the Italian president, Sergio Mattarella:
"Like Garibaldi in Italy, Scanderbeg became the symbol of national pride over time. A symbol in which all the people of the Eagles identify themselves, even outside the Albanian borders.
He strenuously defended the principles and values that today maintain stringent relevance: the acceptance of diversity, and respect for the identities of individuals, as a starting point for the construction of a national identity that transcends and includes."
