In this 2018 we celebrate the centenary of the birth of Ibrahim Kodra, one of the most appreciated and well known Italian painters of the twentieth century.
This is a special year for Albania as it is Year of Skanderbeg, celebrated in the 550 -th anniversary of the death of Giorgio Castriota Skanderbeg, National Hero of the Albanians. In the Ibrahim Kodra exhibition open to the Farnesina there are also elements of Albanian culture: references to Giorgio Castriota Skanderbeg, which Kodra has depicted in some of his paintings, and the triptych on the same wall.
For this project, the Embassy collaborates with the Ibrahim Kodra Foundation, which brought to Rome some of the most significant paintings of Master Kodra's production and took care of curating.
"Ibrahim Kodra is a creator of new and bizarre angelic hosts, his art renews the angelic world and the service of angels lent to humanity.
His creatures are the extreme offshoot of the musician angels of a long pictorial tradition, ranging from Giotto to Beato Angelico and Melozzo da Forlì. These beings are robots of robotic heads, artificial and chimeric structures, livestock equipment. They preferably hold musical instruments or show other functions and services.
Their decoration is carried out with the play of counterweights and with antagonistic limbs, but Kodra does not leave gears, cogwheels, levers or cranks uncovered, masks every additional limb in the aspect of anthropomorphic or zoomorphic or vegetable detail.
The paintings of Kodra are cumbersome copies of models existing in the skies and parodies of a celestial bestiary. The angelic system does not conform to the human aspect, nor is it configured exclusively according to the human structure, but it vivifies better in mechanical systems, because the higher life is outside the classical canon of beauty. The ingenious construction of trastulli shows an anti-classical position that can be placed in the wake of eighteenth-century androids. And this is one of the most original inventions, because it means affecting the canon of classical forms, which has always influenced angelic iconography.
Sophisticated angelic beings, cumbersome anatomies, racked engineering and whimsical design revive cherubs and seraphim in a fairy-tale style. It is, in fact, the wonderful bislacco, in which the bodily apparatus contains trinkets in itself that apparently structure it in a spiritual sense and hide its power and energy.
They are all guardian angels (an aesthetic custody of humanity). After the modern angelology of Paul Klee, only Kodra was able to explore a new celestial order, a mediator between heaven and earth.
The humor is obtained with the singular and aberrated assemblage, due to the increase and overabundance of limbs, so that every being of Kodra is also an anatomical labyrinth and a transfigured puppet, it does not have the usual appearance of a toy, but possesses the aura mysterious of an angel's crowned, glorious and precious playful body.
The result is a layered structure, a bundle of over-limbs for sublime, over-dressed bodies. Kodra unveils the inevitable fabulous nuance of every superior animation, displaying, with zeal and fidelity, a parade of artistic animals, a carousel of buildings and artificial creatures.
The fundamental reference is to the imagination of angelic toys, in the awareness that the spiritual system, in truth, is of a playful nature. All celestial beings are foolish compounds and spiritual realities are transcendent toys, full of frills and pendants. " - Gianni Garrera
