The Spanish Institute of History and Archeology in Rome, in collaboration with the Embassy of Albania in Italy and five international universities, organizes - on 27 November starting from 10: 00 - the conference 'The era of Scanderbeg: between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age '.
The figure of Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg
The figure of the Albanian nobleman Giorgio Castriota (1405-1468) has often been of great interest to historians. The Ottomans nicknamed him "Scanderbeg" - "Prince Alexander" - comparing his military talent with that of Alexander the Great. As the main defender of Albania from the Turkish attacks, Albanian historiography has traditionally considered him his great national hero.
However, the figure of Scanderbeg and his alliances with the Republic of Venice and the kingdom of Naples, aimed at stopping the Ottoman expansion of the Mediterranean, made him famous beyond his borders, transforming at the same time that area of the Balkans into a fundamental strategic enclave for Europe for over a century.
In the 550 anniversary of his death it seems only right to reflect on the legacy of Scanderbeg beyond the war facts of which he became the protagonist. The values aimed at fostering coexistence between different peoples, cultural exchange and collaboration highlight a much more complex framework that must be examined more carefully.
