The film "Broken" di Edmond Budina was presented to European Film Festival a Lecce. This preview of the Albanian director's film in Italy comes after the screening in Albanian and Macedonian cinemas.
It happens that people, especially those who in real life have much power in their hands like politicians, give priority to personal interests, instead of turning the land into a source of wealth they make it the catalyst for the death of a people, of the party weaker.
In the subject of this film children are seen with the desire and innocence of the game, but then the film invites reflection on the conclusion in which the man of power, in the name of development and progress, pollutes the earth and poisons the environment, destroying the future and even putting it into question.
Faced with this responsibility, Budina prefers not to remain silent, at least even teasing people's consciences or, as he himself says, that this film serves as a warning to avoid a huge environmental catastrophe, which we should not allow. "External pollution produced by human hands finds the true source within one's own conscience, and it is from here that we must begin" says Budina.
Just as in Greek tragedies, Budina seeks to carry out a "catharsis", a purification of the spiritual world, of the polluted conscience of society, and to reach this he calls one of us, Jani (Edmond Budina), in a superlative interpretation as protagonist that could only be masterfully embodied by the person who created it.
Budina under the guise of Jani represents us a father, a friend, a simple human being, who sacrificed a lot for the people dear to him, and was rewarded with a deep ingratitude, with abandonment, with betrayal.
On the one hand there is his desire to act properly, on the other there is the love of a parent towards his son, who even in the face of an unknowing that kills you, does not wither hope and efforts to see that the child begins to walk on the right path. All this is difficult, since the lie has more beautiful colors than the truth, has the colors of a deputy's dress, takes on the colors of power that make Andi (Laert Vasili) run towards those who want to use it, or as Jani himself says "Who want his head".
A twisted society, thirsty for money, with moments of lust and power, while in the face of all this there is the brave hero of self-sacrifice, Jani, who refuses to become part of it, who fights to the end to save his son from this slime of vices and crimes. But, the young deputy who forgets that he is the son of a father who has sacrificed even years of life for him, chooses to stay in this circle. Andi chooses to trust those who are preparing his end, for the smoke of dirty business, if not conscience, will very soon dim the power and tear off his powerful clothes. And Jani has no choice but to whisper, with a cry that screams enormous disappointment and sadness "You will not find evil because of me, son".
Budina states that the father perhaps gains nothing, but with this his conduct in the film to win is the Albanian society. "Through this drama I think that Albanian society can make an examination of conscience and say:" No, this is not the kind of life we want! ". In this sense I believe that it is the father who wins. But even the fact that the child is reported and imprisoned is one more point for the Albanian society, and for the father himself ".
If there is something wrong with Albania, says the director, it is politics.
People, when they come to power, believe they are the masters of the place. But this, according to the director, is impossible because, regardless of whether a politician has received many votes or not, he remains a servant of those who have given him the votes. A politician is neither the owner of a city nor of a country. You can't do what you want with a state. "Don't let them do it! This place belongs to everyone; I take the responsibility of making a film, the politician takes the responsibility of being a politician and the prime minister to be prime minister. "
The director has also focused attention on a painful Albanian reality, as is that of sexual violence. He is against the fact that a woman loses her life for matters of honor or is treated like a dog, while the man is considered a hero, being buried by his family with all the honors.
"For me women must have the dignity and respect that belongs to them, because it is the woman who ultimately gives life."
All these problems that the director deals with in the film, he really met them in the Albanian reality. "We hear about the issue of dossiers every day. This is precisely what does not allow us to go on, because we think of how much we enrich ourselves, doing harm to others for free. It's a huge problem that I try to prevent through the film. Obviously someone can say: 'Why, is Albanian society really like this ?!'. I am of the opinion that anything should be said as it really is. That's why I try to say my opinion without being afraid ”.
The children play around the bonfires, the fire of which burns the heaps of garbage, and the smoke surrounds them becoming part of themselves from the very depths, heralding the end of Budina's film "Broken".
