Today, 8 Maggio on the occasion of the VII edition of FOTOGRAFIA, the International Festival of Rome, the Spazio Punctum presents the photographic exhibition of Ignacio Maria Coccia, “KOSOVO, lights of the last winter ".
Kosovo has returned to the spotlight of international attention following the proclamation of independence from Serbia in February 2008, with a unilateral act by the Albanian leadership of Pristina, strongly opposed by Belgrade. Ignacio Coccia documents the everyday life of the town, through a solitary journey in December 2007, in days of suspension, just before the historic passage.
The war for territorial control between Orthodox Serbs who consider Kosovo the cradle of their civilization and Muslim Albanians who make up ninety percent of the population, is secular, multiple, complex and difficult to reconstruct. It is not just an ethno-religious conflict, nor a war of occupation of a country. Kosovo has a soul of its own, made up of destruction, infinite human dramas, but also of hope. The hope of the people, who speak Albanian, Serbian, Turkish and gypsy, pray to God and Allah, but in the end they don't have such different lives; the hope of those who are used to suffering inside, in silence, but without resignation. Thus the sadness and immobility of the countryside speak to us of those who can live in a state of permanent simplicity, while in the city, among the heaps of garbage, the night noise and the echoes of rifles fired into the air, people are surprisingly vital and jovial, despite the constant tension, the overwhelming uncertainty, the suspension.
The photos of Ignacio Coccia, are in black and white, taken in film and digital .—— Ignacio Maria Coccia born in Spain in 1974, currently lives in Ascoli Piceno.
