The "Silvano" Opera, set in a small coastal town in the southern Adriatic of the late 800, is inspired by a novel by Alphonse Karr and was staged for the first time on 25 in March 1895 at the Scala Theater in Milan. Silvano, a fisherman who became a smuggler to cope with poverty, returns to his country after being released from prison. He discovers that his girlfriend Matilde has meanwhile succumbed to the love of Renzo, fishing for violent ways. Matilde is about to leave Renzo, but when Silvano surprises the lovers together, he kills Renzo with a dipistola blow. The work, defined in the marine drama score, constitutes Mascagni's return to the genre of the verist opera inaugurated with Cavalleria rusticana. The lack of success was now attributed to the libretto now to the insufficient emotional impact of the music. Mascagni himself called the Silvano "two acts of small stuff".
