ONDA TV - Sicilian regional television station - has dedicated a service to Albania, focusing specifically on Italian influence in Albanian cuisine.
Turning to Tirana, one does not feel absolutely foreigners because at every corner you can hear Italian; the Italian influence, which dates back to the times of Julius Caesar, had been reinforced by Benito Mussolini, who left a lot of infrastructure in the capital of Albania.
Among the largest is the central square, the gorge of the capital, or Piazza Scanderbeg: from the name of the Albanian hero who repeatedly managed to repel the Ottomans.
Italianness is also felt in eating. That's right, in Albania even traditional food has paid the price of the regime which, put behind it, has become an inconvenient memory. So he looked ahead, in this case physically.
In front of it is the Adriatic, there is the Ionian, there is Italy, there is Italian television, there is Italian food: so Italian restaurants have sprung up all over Albania and we went to visit them. Our cameras have slipped into the kitchen to scan the pots.
Italian cooking also means being at the top of the world for food and wine, and so in Tirana, and in the major Albanian cities, there are cooking schools and professional catering and hotel establishments.
Of course we could not fail to investigate this reality a few steps from Italy; so here we are guests of InItaly, an Italian-Albanian import that imports the excellence of Italian gastronomy to Tirana and Albania.
Naturally, InItaly instructs and updates those who have to do with the kitchen and here we have met in the InItaly showroom the students and the teachers of two schools where the kitchen is at the center of the teaching.
Italian cuisine is also Italian pizza: so here we are in Italian pizzerias. As we have seen in many cases, Albanian or Italian-Albanian pizzerias, where the pizzas coming out of the oven are truly Italian.
Two episodes, those dedicated to cuisine in Albania, which will surely make your mouth water.
