Nazario Sauro, as a good sailor, he knew very well the whole Adriatic sea and above all its eastern coast (Dalmatia, Montenegro and Albania).
He had numerous contacts with the Albanian people; because of his assignment, in fact, he spent his days in Durres, Shëngjin, Ulqin (Ulcinj) and also Shkodër (Scutari), where he had many friends.
He was very sensitive to the Albanian people for many reasons: firstly, because just like his country, Istria (which had been annexed to the Austro-Hungarian Empire), Albania also had undergone years and years of Ottoman domination. Secondly, he was a rebel irredentist who fought for the unification of his native land to Italy; the same thought, that of territorial unification, which was also characterizing Albania.
The third reason is that his work made him and the Albanian people know each other. Finally, because in his native land (besides Istria, also in Venice and Trieste) he had met many Albanians.
Love and respect for the Albanian people was concrete and sincere. It is no coincidence, in fact, that Sauro called his daughter Albania. In addition to weapons, the Italian sailor took care of the Albanian refugees who had moved to Trieste due to his special geographical and political position; activity carried out by Sauro completely voluntarily and free of charge.
An example of an honored hero
Sauro is among the most important and most famous heroes of Italy. He was declared as such by King Vittorio Emanuele III on 20 January 1919. In the 1935, instead, in the presence of King Vittorio Emanuele III a magnificent monument was inaugurated in Koper, his hometown, by the sculptor Attilio Selva. Unfortunately the artwork was destroyed in the 1944 during the German invasion.
In the 2002, the Italian navy has donated the 'Naziario Sauro' submarine to the Genoa museum. In Trieste, on the other hand, where Sauro had the greatest sailor activity, a magnificent monument was dedicated to him. Similarly in other Italian cities there are squares, streets, promenades or institutions named after him, located in the most beautiful and important places of Naples, Venice, Bari, Ancora, Siracusa and so on.
Who was Nazario Sauro
Nazario Sauro, naval soldier and Italian patriot, 20 Settembre 1880 was born in Koper. From a very young age he started working at sea, as his family tradition wanted. He soon became proficient in the profession of sailor and took command of a large merchant ship. At the age of 24 years he enrolled at the Nautical School of Trieste, where he received the master's degree from major.
Very important during his life was the patriotism of Nazario Sauro. For this Mazzinian ideal of the independence of all peoples, he carried out an intense clandestine activity in favor of Albania by leading several clandestine expeditions alongside the insurgents of the land of the eagles, who aspired to liberation from Ottoman rule. The Albanians considered Sauro a trusted and secure friend, sought him out, asked him for advice; for this reason, in the circles of Albanian patriots, Sauro was extremely popular.
In the 1913 he returned to Venice where he continued his independence ideal, this time from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Arrested during an insurgency in his homeland, he was sentenced with the death penalty for high treason, the 10 Agosto 1915 was implemented. Shortly before the execution he wrote two letters mentioned above concerning his family.
