The book "Negative Space" by Luljeta Lleshanaku is among the four finalists for the 'Griffin 2019' award in Canada.
After winning the Pen England prize and being nominated among the finalists of the Pen America prize, the collection of poems by Luljeta Lleshanaku - masterfully translated by Ani Gjika and published simultaneously in both the United Kingdom and the United States in the last year - has been selected among the finalists for the Canadian International Griffin Award.
The Griffin Poetry Prize
Il prize, founded in 2000 by businessman and philanthropist Scott Griffin, is awarded annually in two categories: best Canadian poetry and best international poetry written or translated into English.
It is considered one of the most important literary awards and awards each of the finalists with 10.000 Canadian dollars.
"Luljeta Lleshanaku's book offers a rare look at contemporary Albanian poetry. Ani Gjika, who is the poet herself, was able to express not only all the poems of the work in English but also the dark atmosphere present throughout the book; a feeling of profound transience due to living under strong political pressure.
Opening the door of trauma, we encounter a tender and intelligent voice with stories that illuminate existence in a shared humanity, thus restoring dignity in a world torn by terror and violence; the poetry of Lleshanaku is always annoying and relaxing for us, its inhabitants."- we read in the argument of the jury of the prize on the selection of the book as a finalist.
In the past, the poetry collection has been positively reviewed by many other characters from the world of literature but also by international media such as 'The Guardian'.
"Luljeta Lleshanaku is a pioneer of Albanian poetry. He speaks with a completely original voice, with his images and language always unexpected and innovative. His poetry has few ties to past or present poetic styles in America, Europe or the rest of the world. And, interestingly enough, it is not related to anything in Albanian poetry. With Lleshanaku we have something completely original."- said the well-known British and American literary translator, Peter Constantine.
