Ismail Kadare is the greatest writer of contemporary Albanian literature and is a great personality known worldwide, not only in the literary field, but also on the political, social and a great defender of human rights.
In every work of his you are surprised to see how much he is connected to the roots of his country: It seems to you that his narration looks at the whole history of his nation and spaces everywhere. In every event and in every person; in all his actions his desire for freedom emerges.
Through his magic pen he represented the tragic history of Albania of the past and of today. In his works you find the profound meaning of this sad country, but of a great spiritual strength, which is described in its history and legends, songs and dances.
A series of works the author dedicates to the problems and conflicts of the Balkans, aware that the new century cannot build on violence and murder, on racism and deportation of peoples, but, on the contrary, on their right to freedom and stability.
Ismail Kadare was born in Gjirokaster the 28 January 1936. He completed his compulsory and higher education in his native city. Graduated in Literature from the University of Tirana, he completed his studies at the Gorky University in Moscow.
Kadare has always participated in the literary life of his country, and in the discussion and resolution of the serious national social and political problems of Albania. His thought, always original, courageous and emancipated, played an important role in their resolution.
In October 1990, when the Communist leadership did not undertake any democratic reform in oppressed and isolated Albania, to express its disapproval publicly, Kadare asked for political asylum in France.
From there, through the foreign press and numerous interviews and articles, he greatly stimulated the development of the democratic awareness of the Albanians. The great weight of his thought has been felt particularly in the solution in this decade of the vital problem of Kosovo.
His literary work is very rich, vigorous and of very varied genres. It is composed of poems, stories, short stories, novels, essays, publications, literary and folkloristic studies, diaries, conversations etc. The major contributions he brought to the field of poetry and the novel.
Ismail Kadare is one of the most important poets of contemporary Albanian literature. Together with Dritero Agolli and Fatos Arapi in the '60-'70 years they formed a famous trio of poets who elevated Albanian poetry to high levels, especially the poetry that was written within the confines of the motherland.
At the center of Kadare's poetry we find the man of the twentieth century, the man of the discovery of the atom and of great technical and scientific innovations.
Among his main volumes of poems: "My century" (1961), "Because they think these mountains" (1961), "Motivi di sole" (1968), "Time" (1976).
Kadare's prose is very rich and varied. The novels are the largest and most important part of all his work. Kadare's novels have played an important role in the formation of the modern Albanian novel. With their publication in dozens of foreign languages the Albanian literature has been known throughout the world.
Among his major novels: "The general of the dead army" (1963), "The drums of the rain" (1970), "The city of stone" (1971), "The winter of great solitude" (1973), "Who brought Doruntina" (1980), "The broken April" (1980), "The palace of dreams" (1981), "The adverse year" (1986), "Concert at the end of winter" (1988 ), "The monster" (1990), "The pyramid" (1995), "The twilight of the gods of the steppe".
Kadare's work, translated so far into more than 60 languages of the world, is so widespread, because it is a universal work, and useful to readers in many countries.
Ismail Kadare has been nominated for the Nobel Prize several times. His name arrived for 3 or 4 for final selection.
He is honorary member of the French Academy.
The writer Ismail Kadare was also the winner of the Spanish award, "Prince of Asturias for Literature”, One of the most prestigious awards in the world in this field.
