The film Broken di Edmond Budina it is set in theAlbania Today it is a mirror of the changes that have taken place in a country, which has suddenly passed from the ferocious dictatorship to an unbridled liberal democracy, where the rules are often trampled down to achieve a lightning-fast and unscrupulous enrichment.
In this type of society we are judged capable and of value, therefore respected, based on the degree of wealth obtained. The illegality increases corruption, which corrodes from within society, leaving only a mask of hypocrisy on them. Thus freedom becomes an illusion and it often happens that the defenseless pay their honesty at a high price.
With this film we want to discover today's Albania, from the center to the periphery, with all its strengths and its contradictions.
It tells the story of the parent-child relationship, which is not subject to divorce but is however severely challenged by this unbridled selfishness.
We want to unravel a scourge of developing societies, which is the abandonment of rural areas and the overcrowding of cemented urban centers that, instead of improving the quality of life, make it worse.
We try to provoke consciences about crimes against nature: pollution and exploitation without criteria.
There is a modest attempt to raise the voice against political corruption.
History can be considered timeless and without place, where the contrasts of society are also highlighted through the image, the landscape, the scenography and the inner fracture of the characters. Well-being intertwines with backwardness, development with physical and moral depletion, hypocritical appearance with moral integrity and sacrifice.
Photography attempts to harmonize fiction and documentarism, where part of the scenes are "stolen" from real life. This is why in all the film only natural light is used, which is also an ethical choice.
The beginning is a little slower to favor the description and, with the increasing intensity of the events, it becomes more dynamic: it is a rhythmic and emotional crescendo to reach the climax in the final.
This film was made thanks to a tremendous teamwork of people of different origins and languages. There…
Broken - Synopsis
Many years of unjust suffering in a foreign prison are nothing in the face of the ingratitude of the dearest people, who transform themselves when it comes to safeguarding profit and their own interests, forgetting that the destruction of the soul and the environment are the first place a loss and a devastation of oneself.
Jani, in his sixties, after serving a long sentence in Ancona, returns to his home country, Albania, which he finds distorted. From the old neighbor, Marko, he discovers shocking truths: his wife died immediately after his arrest in Italy and his son, Andi, who during all the years of imprisonment never tried to contact his father, became meanwhile one of the most influential and corrupt politicians.
Jani goes with Marko to his home town and what he finds is an old ruined Albanian village. The house where he was born is occupied by a woman, Ema, and her two little girls. The woman turns around armed because she fears for the life of her daughters.
Ema does a striptease in her room every night. The village's pensioners gather every evening to watch his little show outside the window and leave a little money on time.
Little by little, a very familiar climate is established in the home, but relations become strained when Ema discovers Jani's imprisonment.
Meanwhile, one of the girls shows signs of radiation poisoning due to toxic waste, buried right where the girls play every day ... Following the discovery of a dossier in Tirana, Jani learns disturbing truth but is locked up in a hospice and passed off as unstable.
Having managed to escape, he returns to the village and confesses to Ema the reasons for the unjust imprisonment in Italy ...
