The next 15 July will arrive in Italian cinemas Ballkan Bazar, a film by the well-known Albanian actor and director Edmond Budina. The film, an Italo-Albanian production is a collaboration between Erafilm e Mediaplex Italy.
Nationalism of the countries of South-East Europe in turmoil, a shocking history of exhumations and missing bones, told in 85 minutes only.
The film was presented in March at the International Film Festival in Sofia. Later, it was released in Albanian cinemas. The film sparked a strong reaction in Greece, where the media was quick to call it "a shameful affront to the Hellenic and Orthodox communities".
Ballkan Bazar is based on real events that took place in a village (Kosinë) in Albania, near the Greek border years ago.
The bones of a French man are mistakenly sent to Albania. The man's daughter, Jolie (played by Catherine Wilkening) together with her half Italian daughter, Orsola (played by Veronica Gentili) will travel to a small Albanian village near the Greek border, where the journalist Genti (Visar Vishka) will help the two women understand what is happening.
They will probably discover the most bizarre bazaar of the bones, with which the history of the Balkans can be bought and sold.
Greek nationalists erected a cemetery for compatriots who died in World War II - in order to increase their numbers within the Albanian border and realize potential territorial ambitions - by stealing and buying Albanian bodies and passing them off as Greeks, with the help of the parish priest of the village (played by Budina).
The territory, the origin, the culture, the traditions, the identity, the roots and the antiquity are reasons that have unleashed many wars throughout the world, especially in the Balkans, where the borders have been moved according to the aspirations of the strongest.
But how current can this be today, in a world increasingly oriented towards globalization and the abolition of borders?
We made this film because it shows real facts that seem to be surreal, contradictions, surprises, situations, characters, love. In other words, it has all the elements necessary to be a black comedy, unusual and captivating. (production note)
