The Croatian foreign minister Marija Pejčinović Burić signed an agreement with a UN representative in Albania last Friday Brian Williams, concerning the project to combat marine pollution.
The Albanian Foreign Minister was also present at the time of the agreement. Ditmir Bushati, and the Minister of Tourism, Blendi Klosi.
Albania has a huge problem with the collection and disposal of waste, which is often dumped into rivers. From there innumerable plastic objects, such as bottles, flow into the Adriatic Sea. Precisely for this reason, the Albanian government has been criticized for not having done enough to build a national waste collection and recycling system.
The agreement with Croatia comes precisely in this direction, to avoid, above all, that the plastic waste floats along the Croatian coasts going to damage the important Croatian tourist sector.
Albania is the problem of waste
In the 2009 April, when Albania presented the official application for membership of the European Union, a group of experts was sent by the European Commission to design a new strategy for waste management. The task was completed in a few months thanks to the approval of the government.
This new program has captured the interest of Italian and German governments, which have funded several projects and programs for waste management, restoring the hope of a clean Albania. But recently, the government has opted for a new strategy, with dozens of Japanese, German and Italian experts who have rolled up their sleeves to design a national master plan and new national programs in the field of waste management.
Useless efforts, because all the millions of dollars invested in this period of time have not solved the problems. In the last decade, in fact, Albania has doubled the amount of waste produced - despite the total waste in Europe falling by 6% - and, moreover, the level of recycling has remained drastically low. Out of twelve planned dumps, only two have been built so far. The rest were 'replaced' - at least momentarily - by the incinerators built in Elbasan, Fier and Tirana.
