San Marzano di San Giuseppe
San Marzano di San Giuseppe is the bigger Arbëreshë Municipality of Italy (in Apulia there are also other Arbëreshë communities, such as Casalvecchio di Puglia and Chieuti).
Almost 500 years have passed since Demetrio Capuzzimati, noble captain of Giorgio Skanderberg (Albanian national hero died in 1468 after a heroic resistance against the Turks), to escape the submission of Mohammed II, settled with some Albanian noble families in Taranto and he bought the feud of San Marzano from the Royal Court for 700 ducats.
It was the 1530 and in the same year it also obtained the fiefdom Rizzi de li Riezi, which merged with the previous one, formed the fiefdom called San Marzano. The latter, over the years, has almost always been owned by Albanian families who have tried to preserve the memory of their ancestors.
